As spring awakens the earth with new life—flowers blooming, days lengthening, and the world shaking off winter’s chill—Christians around the globe prepare to celebrate the greatest miracle in history: the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Easter Sunday (April 5, 2026) is far more than a holiday with eggs, bunnies, or family gatherings. At its heart, Easter proclaims that death has been defeated, sin has been conquered, and eternal life is offered to all who believe.
The Road to the Empty Tomb
The Easter story doesn’t begin on Sunday morning—it begins in the darkness of Good Friday. Jesus, the sinless Son of God, was crucified for our sins. He who knew no sin became sin for us (2 Corinthians 5:21), bearing the punishment we deserved so we could be reconciled to God.
The disciples scattered in fear. The women who followed Jesus watched from a distance, heartbroken. A heavy stone sealed the tomb, and Roman guards stood watch. To every human eye, hope seemed buried forever.
But God’s plan was never defeated by a cross or a tomb.
Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene and other women went to the tomb to anoint Jesus’ body. What they found changed everything:
“He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay.” (Matthew 28:6, NIV)
The stone was rolled away. The tomb was empty. Angels declared the impossible truth: Jesus is alive!
Why the Resurrection Changes Everything
The resurrection isn’t just a historical event—it’s the cornerstone of our faith. As the apostle Paul wrote:
“And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins… But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep.” (1 Corinthians 15:17, 20, NIV)
Because Jesus rose:
- Death is defeated. What once held ultimate power now has no final say. “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?” (1 Corinthians 15:55)
- Our sins are forgiven. Jesus’ perfect sacrifice was accepted by the Father, proven by the empty tomb.
- We have living hope. “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” (1 Peter 1:3)
This hope isn’t wishful thinking. It’s anchored in the reality of a risen Savior who promises:
“I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die.” (John 11:25-26)
Easter Hope for Today
In a world still marked by pain, loss, uncertainty, and brokenness, Easter speaks a better word. The same power that raised Jesus from the dead is at work in us through the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:11). Whatever “tomb” you face today—grief, addiction, failure, illness, doubt, or fear—the resurrection declares that new life is possible.
Easter invites us to:
- Remember the cost of our salvation and the depth of God’s love.
- Rejoice in the victory Jesus won once for all.
- Respond by trusting Him more fully and sharing this good news with others.
This Easter, may your heart echo the joyful proclamation of the early church:
“He is risen!” “He is risen indeed!”
A Simple Easter Prayer
Lord Jesus, Thank You for conquering sin and death on our behalf. Thank You for the empty tomb that proves Your promises are true. Fill us afresh with resurrection hope. Help us live as people who belong to the Risen King—bold in faith, generous in love, and eager to share the gospel. May this Easter not just be a day we celebrate, but a truth we live every day. In Your mighty name, Amen.
As we approach Easter Sunday, take time to reflect on the resurrection. Read the Gospel accounts (Matthew 28, Mark 16, Luke 24, John 20), gather with your church family, and let the reality of the risen Christ renew your spirit.
He is risen indeed—and because He lives, we can face tomorrow with unshakable hope.
What about you? How does the resurrection give you hope in your current season of life? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.
